Kaiser Permanente is the nation’s largest nonprofit health plan in the United States, according to Fortune magazine (http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2008/fortune/0805/gallery.private companies.fortune/5.html) and serves over 8 million members in nine states and the District of Columbia. Kaiser Permanente has medical centers throughout the Bay Area including San Francisco, the East Bay, the North Bay, the Peninsula, and the Silicon Valley. The health provider provides an integrated health delivery system, including preventive care, well-baby and prenatal care, immunizations, emergency care, screening diagnostics, hospital and medical services and pharmacy services.

Kaiser Permanente San Francisco

Opened since 1954, the Kaiser Permanente San Francisco Medical Center currently serves more than 170,000 members in a variety of locations throughout the city. The medical center includes a 247-bed, seismically up-to-standard hospital with a top-rated emergency department and neonatal intensive care nursery, as well as several medical office buildings providing both primary and specialty medicine.

Several unique features of the medical center include bilingual Chinese and Spanish modules, where practitioners provide adult primary care to members in their native languages and an electronic medical record that allows for integrated care and communication across a broad spectrum of specialties and the Pharmacy and Imaging Departments.

Other services at the medical center include pediatric specialists, a full-service health-education department with classes for both Kaiser Permanente members and the general public (at a nominal fee), after-business-hours urgent care on weekends and evenings, house calls for senior members, a weekly farmers market and state-of-the-art cardiac care.

Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center is a licensed acute-care hospital with distinct part that is skilled nursing and a rehabilitation-care facility within the Community Health Network, which is owned and operated by the City and County of San Francisco, Department of Public Health. It is the largest single-site municipally owned and operated skilled nursing care facility in the country.

San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH) is a licensed general acute care hospital within the Community Health Network, which is owned and operated by the City and County of San Francisco, Department of Public Health. SFGH provides a full complement of inpatient, outpatient, emergency, skilled nursing, diagnostic, mental health and rehabilitation services for adults and children. It is the largest acute inpatient and rehabilitation hospital for psychiatric patients in the city. Additionally, it is the only acute hospital in San Francisco that provides 24-hour psychiatric emergency services and operates the only Level I Trauma Center for 1.5 million residents of San Francisco and northern San Mateo County.

UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Children's Hospital are recognized as world leaders in health care, known for innovative medicine, advanced technology and compassionate care. For more than a century, UCSF has offered the highest quality medical treatment. Today, its expertise covers virtually all conditions, including cancer, heart disease, infertility, neurological disorders, organ transplantation and orthopedics as well as special services for women and children.

As an academic medical center, UCSF offers pioneering treatments not widely available elsewhere. For example, it is the only nationally designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in Northern California and is dedicated to finding new and better treatments for cancer patients. It is also Northern California's only nationally designated Center of Excellence in Women's Health, which offers specialized care and health education for women.

It also provides health services for children and pregnant women. The UCSF Children's Hospital is a “hospital within a hospital” with more than 150 specialists in more than 40 areas of medicine. UCSF has programs designed specifically for young patients, including a 50-bed neonatal intensive care nursery, recreational therapy for recovering kids and 60 outreach clinics throughout Northern California.

In the area of neurology and neurosurgery, UCSF Medical Center is among the top five hospitals in the nation. It offers one of the largest brain-tumor treatment programs in the nation as well as the only comprehensive memory disorders center and the only comprehensive epilepsy center in Northern California.

UCSF is also distinguished with one of the nation's largest centers for kidney and liver transplants. Its AIDS program is the most comprehensive in the nation and its surgical eye care program is the largest in Northern California. In the area of orthopedics, UCSF is internationally recognized for treating the spine, including deformities, degenerative disc disease, tumors and fractures. Mount Zion Hospital was established in 1887 as a voluntary, nonprofit hospital to render “medical and surgical aid and service to the needy and distressed sick of the community ... without regard to race or creed.” Today, Mount Zion is a part of the University of California San Francisco and is a major teaching facility at UCSF, along with Moffitt-Long, San Francisco General and the VA Medical Center of San Francisco.

Good Samaritan Hospital opened in 1965 as a general acute-care hospital. Since 1965, Regional has been an essential part of Santa Clara County's public and private health-care networks.
