There are a few special places in our nation where people can experience the sweep of American history. The Presidio is one such place. Established by Spanish explorers in 1776, it is the birthplace of San Francisco. Developed by the U.S. Army over the course of 150 years, it is being reborn as a premier national park site. The Presidio of San Francisco is a national treasure and a local jewel.

Today, the 1,491-acre Presidio is the centerpiece of the Golden Gate National Parks, which encompasses 80,000 acres of open space along the Northern California shoreline. The Presidio is a unique urban national park where people live and work as well as visit. In a sense, it is San Francisco's oldest neighborhood.

The Presidio is a place where visitors feel welcome walking a shoreline trail, visiting a museum, or gathering for a bite to eat, and where residents have nature, beauty, and history right outside their front door.

A "Living" History
During its two centuries as a military post, the Presidio was a self-contained community that supported the varied needs of military and family life. The Presidio's beautiful homes are the legacy of this history. The park offers a spectrum of rental housing options in twenty-one distinct neighborhoods. Units range in size from one to seven bedrooms. Many homes are contributing features to the Presidio's National Historic Landmark District designation. Apartments and townhouses are available, as well as historic single-family homes and duplexes.

The park's amenities include an extensive trail system, a free shuttle to downtown San Francisco, and easy access to all the natural and cultural gems the Presidio has to offer.
